deviantART=THE online ARTISTIC Community? I don’t think so…

December 24, 2007

My circle of friend told me about the FANTASTIC online community deviantArt… I wasn’t very curious about this kind of artistic community, because in this point I’m very oldfashioned… Artistic communities like Pulchri Studio, Independent Performance Group, Art-Club or Andy Warhols famous FACTORY are THE artistic STAGE for modern, creative Artists of every single Century…
Of course the WORLD WIDE WEB helps suchs communities, but a “pure” online community like deviantArt isn’t a meeting point for good, serious Artists…and that’s for sure…
Yesterday I visited deviantArt.com….and I was dissapointed…
It’s all about (95%) Digital Art…it’s okay….but it’s boring…
But the worst of all – there is a lot of rubbish…a lot of….a “very” lot of…garbage….published…by some “ARTISTS”.

for example –> Cuddy Face by Knuffy the Wolf

cuddy_face_by_knuffy_the_wolf.jpg

So ME, MYSELF and I will never ever visit the page again and will never ever publish something on this page…However…

Generally art is a (product of) human activity, made with the intention of stimulating the human senses as well as the human mind… by transmitting emotions and/or ideas. Beyond this description, there is no general agreed-upon definition of art, since defining the boundaries of “art” is SUBJECTIVE.

Nevertheless…I’m asking myself everyday…WHERE IS “THE FACTORY” OF THE 21TH CENTURY?

i think, i forgot to write in english, but i try, this is a very interresting fakt about art groups because they were some since there is art ,since there is a human beeing, and i think they are still some, but we do not know, they are not famous like the Factory( i have to mention that this was not a real art group, Andy was almost the hole group himself). For example “Die Brücke“ an art group in Germany contained: Kirchner, Rudllof, Heckel, Nolde…but Factory was just AndY!
Nowadays a lot of stuff is on the web,and we forget the real art groups arround us. Deviant art in also ?real?unreal? but it is dedicated to computer game art and such stuff..
    puff quiet long this reply:))

    @ baborka
First of all I do not talk about – like you say it – ARTGROUPS or rather/better MOVEMENTS…you can’t compare THE FACTORY (a place) with DIE BRÜCKE (an a.group and movement)

I know that The Factory isn’t the best example, but it is the latest and best known one…
And Andy W. wasn’t alone at his Factory…remeber the Andy Warhols SUPERSTARS, like Billy Name, Jackie Curtis, Frank Holliday,…

Being a member of dA, I can’t deny that there are people that post there who do lack artistic skill. I think one has to remember that most are pre-teens/teenagers just wanting to learn how to draw and develop their skill. Not to mention that for them this is their only way of showing their work without having to ask mom and dad for membership dues to local art communities (which would definitely result in a “Not until you have your own job.” response for most).

But, there are also some fantastic artists who post their work there. A link pointing to my favorites would begin to prove so, in my opinion.

Ultimately, it all comes down to what your personal aesthetic is if you support dA or not. It’s clearly a place where I believe the envelope isn’t pushed a great deal (if at all) and manga rules, but you have to give it credit for giving people *somewhere* to show their “skill” as well as a place to learn.

I understand your point of view…and I agree halfpart(???!): Actually it is a place to show your skills, but(!!) the problem about the whole thing is, that people are not always honest enough to tell you that probably the piece or the photography is sh**. I think such communities are a good idea and me myself I adore deviantart-it´s Anna who´s sceptical-, but on the other hand it´s not always helpful, especially not to those who would need it the most :-)

I agree with that but you don’t want to completely trash the person’s work without something constructive to offer. Honesty is key even though it’s tough trying to tell someone over and over they need to look closer or simply to practice their skill more without losing patience or sounding like a broken record.

It takes maturity from both the critic as well as the person receiving critique and not many pre-teens/teenagers would, in my opinion, react maturely from being told “it’s crap.” Hence, most people don’t respond at all to avoid that kind of possible reaction. That or they simply don’t want to take the time needed to outline their thoughts and respond.

And it’s definitely aggravating not getting any response or the simple “Looks great!”. But hey, just because you join local art community doesn’t mean you’re guaranteed an increased level of response. One can only hope in either case. :)
